Local Virginia GOP Chair Says Arlington County Officials Prioritize Illegal Immigrants Over Public Safety

Arlington County’s Republican chairman accuses local officials of diverting resources from law enforcement to sanctuary policies, arguing that public safety is being sacrificed for an open-borders agenda.

A bitter dispute over immigration enforcement has erupted in Arlington County, Virginia, after the local Republican Party chairman accused county officials of systematically prioritizing illegal immigrants over the safety of American citizens. In a statement published on social media and later picked up by local outlets, Matthew Hurtt, chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee, declared that “Arlington County leaders have made it clear: they value illegal immigrants more than the safety of law-abiding residents.” The accusation comes amid a spike in property crimes and a reported shortage of police personnel in the county.

Hurtt’s criticism centers on the county’s continued adherence to sanctuary policies, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. According to data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Arlington County has denied or ignored a significant number of detainer requests in the past fiscal year. A detainer request is a formal ask from ICE to hold an individual in local custody for up to 48 hours after their release date so that federal agents can take them into custody for removal proceedings. Arlington County’s refusal to honor these requests, Hurtt argues, has allowed individuals with criminal records to remain on the streets.

The Republican chairman specifically referenced a case from late 2025, in which a Honduran national with a prior conviction for driving under the influence was arrested again for assault and battery. Despite ICE issuing a detainer, Arlington County authorities released the individual on bond. Two weeks later, the same individual was charged with a second assault. “This is not a hypothetical,” Hurtt wrote. “This is a pattern of willful negligence that endangers every family in this county.”

Why this matters: Arlington County is not a border jurisdiction. It is a wealthy, urbanized county directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Its sanctuary policies are a matter of local legislative choice, not demographic necessity. The county’s board, controlled by Democrats, has defended its stance by arguing that cooperation with ICE undermines trust between immigrant communities and the police. However, critics note that the very trust the board claims to protect is eroded when violent offenders are released to re-offend. A 2023 report from the Virginia State Crime Commission found that jurisdictions with sanctuary policies experienced a 7% higher rate of recidivism among non-citizen offenders compared to counties that cooperated with ICE. While correlation is not causation, the statistic undercuts the argument that non-cooperation improves community safety.

FORTIS analysis: This is a classic case of local government prioritizing political signaling over measurable outcomes. The Arlington County Board has chosen to treat illegal immigration status as a protected category, effectively immunizing certain individuals from the consequences of criminal behavior. The result is a two-tier system of justice: one for citizens and legal residents, who face the full weight of the law, and another for illegal immigrants, who are given the benefit of the doubt even after multiple arrests. This approach does not align with sound public policy. It wastes police resources, increases the burden on courts, and, most importantly, exposes law-abiding residents to preventable harm.

Counterpoint: Supporters of sanctuary policies argue that they are necessary to prevent racial profiling and to encourage undocumented immigrants to report crimes without fear of deportation. Arlington County Board Chair Christian Dorsey has previously stated that “public safety is best achieved when everyone feels safe coming forward to report crimes.” This argument has merit in theory, but the data from jurisdictions that have adopted such policies is mixed. A 2022 study by the Cato Institute found that sanctuary counties had slightly lower rates of violent crime overall, but higher rates of property crime. The same study noted that the effect on recidivism among non-citizen offenders was not statistically significant at the national level. However, local conditions vary, and Arlington’s specific refusal to cooperate with ICE on violent offenders is difficult to defend on pragmatic grounds.
