NYC Kitten Rescue Defends ‘NO F---ING MAGA’ Adoption Policy as PETA Calls for It to Be Abolished

A Manhattan-based animal rescue group has refused to walk back its policy of denying adoptions to anyone who supports Donald Trump, claiming it is a ‘safe space’ for animals. PETA, typically a left-wing ally, has demanded the policy be scrapped, calling it a distraction from animal welfare.

A volunteer-run kitten rescue in New York City has ignited a firestorm after it emerged that its adoption application includes a clause explicitly barring anyone with a “NO F---ING MAGA” attitude. The policy, first flagged by a social media user on X last week, has drawn condemnation from both sides of the aisle, including an unusual rebuke from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

According to a screenshot of the adoption form posted online, the rescue — which operates under the name “Foster Kittens NYC” — asks potential adopters to confirm that they “are not a MAGA supporter” and that they “do not display any pro-Trump paraphernalia.” The form warns that any violation could result in the immediate reclaiming of the adopted kitten. The rescue’s director, identified only as “Lindsay” in a statement to the New York Post, defended the policy, saying, “We are a progressive, inclusive space for animals. MAGA ideology is incompatible with compassion.”

PETA, an organization known for its far-left advocacy on animal rights, surprised many by calling for the policy to be abolished. In a press release issued Wednesday, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said, “Political litmus tests have no place in animal adoption. The only question that should matter is whether the adopter can provide a loving, safe home.” Newkirk added that the policy “trivializes the serious work of rescuing animals and alienates potential adopters who might otherwise save a life.”

Why does this matter? The incident exposes a growing trend of politicizing everyday transactions — from coffee shops refusing service to police officers to landlords declining tenants based on bumper stickers. Animal adoption, a process that should focus on the welfare of the animal, is being hijacked by activists who view every interaction through an ideological lens. This is precisely the kind of cultural tribalism that undermines social cohesion and drives Americans further apart.

From a free-market perspective, the rescue has the right to set its own rules as a private organization. No one is forced to adopt from them. But the practical consequence is that fewer cats find homes, and the rescue’s own mission suffers. Data from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) shows that New York City shelters euthanized over 2,000 cats in 2023 due to overcrowding. Any policy that reduces the pool of potential adopters — especially one based on political affiliation — directly harms the animals the rescue claims to protect.

The FORTIS analysis sees this as emblematic of a broader problem: the conflation of personal political identity with moral fitness. There is no evidence that a Trump supporter is less capable of caring for a kitten than a Biden supporter. In fact, a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center found that pet ownership is nearly identical across party lines, with 64% of Republicans and 63% of Democrats owning a pet. The policy is not based on facts but on an emotional bias that treats political views as a proxy for character.

Counterpoint: Some defenders of the rescue argue that private organizations have the right to establish any criteria they wish, and that people offended by the policy can simply adopt elsewhere. That is technically true, but it ignores the central role that rescues play in animal welfare. Unlike a bakery or a barbershop, an animal rescue is a quasi-public institution that often receives tax-exempt status, donations from the public, and cooperation from municipal shelters. When such entities inject partisan politics into their operations, they risk alienating the broader community that supports animal welfare across party lines.

Moreover, PETA’s intervention — however rare — underscores the inconsistency of left-wing activists who champion “inclusion” but practice exclusion when it comes to political opponents. The forced resignation of a volunteer at the rescue who reportedly questioned the policy highlights the internal intolerance. According to a Reddit post from a former volunteer that was later deleted, the rescue’s leadership engaged in “political purity testing” during training sessions.
